Description

The listing, ASUS EEE PC 701 netbook in excellent condition has ended.

This is the very first ASUS EEE PC from 2007. 4G RAM, built in web cam. Simple Linux OS with easy document apps compatible with Word, PowerPoint, etc. There are also some games on it. You can Google for specs and reviews.

This is very gently used and works great. It's lightweight and tiny; I've shown it with a paperback novel in some of the photos to give you a sense of the size. You can stick it in your purse or briefcase and not even notice it. And it's super easy to use.

Some things to be aware of:
-- It is sometimes difficult to get this to talk to particular wireless networks.
-- Batteries have always been a little bit of an issue with these things. It doesn't always report remaining battery power accurately. I found that it generally lasts 2-3 hours rather than the 4 hours advertised.
-- This is not super speedy. For example, it can take it 3 or 4 minutes to establish a wifi connection.
-- It's a small screen and a lot of web sites are not optimized for it. You will have to put up with some horizontal scrolling!

Super useful if you want to take notes in a class, do straight writing, access email and web sites while traveling, that sort of thing. You can't get a lot of complicated work done; for example, you can read PowerPoint slides, but it would be pretty painful to write them.

Please do look up specs and reviews, and ask me questions if you need to, so you're sure you know what you're getting. This is a somewhat geeky item, and it's a little out of date, although it's still super handy for a lot of things.

Comes with power supply and carrying sleeve.

US only, free shipping by USPS within two business days of receiving the winner's shipping address.

Hey, for anyone who's looking at this auction for the first time, I want to make sure you notice that if you're reading this, you're on page 2 of the comments--if you go to page 1 you'll see a bunch of discussion about this computer that might be helpful to you!

Thanks for taking time to spell out the specifics about how it operates

You're very welcome! It really is a simple machine to operate. It turns on and off much faster than a laptop or desktop, and all the apps are easy to find and use. The only thing that I've found difficult is getting the wireless to talk to some networks (mostly networks that have a lot of security; I don't have any trouble in people's houses or in places like coffee shops where they have free and open wifi. And "guest" networks in schools, businesses, hotels, etc, are usually pretty easy.

There are lots of Eee PC user forums, too; if you're thinking about bidding you can just do a search and find lots of people talking about how they use these little machines, what they're good for and not good for and so on.

It's a netbook, so mos likely 2GB max, but its a cheap netbook, so might only support 1GB

It's actually not that hard to upgrade the ram, or the HDD. It's a netbook, I used to own one, they're pretty easy to upgrade, but it depends on whether the motherboard can support more ram or not. The HDD is always upgradable, but whoever wins and wants to upgrade the ram, make sure to look this up, and find out the max ram supported.

Weird, I just noticed that a word got dropped from the first line of this description. It should read "4G, 512M RAM."

This thing, for you windows lovers out there, can handle XP, but not Windows 7/Vista. You WILL have to upgrade the Harddrive in it though, if you want any form of windows, no windows OS now-a-days will fit on 4GB's. PS, I want that 4GB SSD, I could use it :D

Also, everyone should be aware that these things were not really designed to make upgrading easy; in fact many upgrades would void the warranty (not that the warranty is still in effect; I'm just saying that that's a sign of how much they weren't trying to make it easy). I can't emphasize enough that anyone who's not already a fan of these things should read the specs carefully and check user forums for info on any mods you'd want to make. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone--this computer is in excellent working order and very handy as is, and a lot of people have all sorts of tricks for upgrading or augmenting both the 512M RAM and the 4G drive. I just don't want anyone to spend their hard-earned points on any erroneous assumptions!

I have both the User Guide and the Quick Start Guide that came with this netbook. They will both ship with the computer to the winner. (I hid a bunch of "Nice Auction" comments to try to move this info up higher on the page; please don't be be offended if I hid yours--I still appreciate your interest!)

Would you be willing to ship to Canada if the winner pays for shipping?

Oh, sorry, the reason I don't ship outside the US isn't so much the cost as the complexity. But thank you for asking.

If you're looking up info online, search for "Eee PC 701 4G" to make sure you're reading about the right netbook. Original price for this in 2007 was $399. There are lots of discussions and reviews still online. By the way, when you read the negative reviews, note that while some are legit complaints, some are people who are essentially complaining that this isn't a notebook, which it clearly isn't intended to be. It helps to have the right expectations of the device :-)

Unfortunately I have no idea--so sorry. ASUS has some user forums on their support site http://service.asus.com/, or maybe you could call their tech support line. There are also some Eee PC user forums at http://www.eeeuser.com/.
