are the waste ties long enough to fit a rather large woman? what is the material?

Oh absolutely. The fit will vary depending on a person's size of course, but when I worked at Bath&BodyWorks, I worked with all different shaped people and there were two particularly large women who still wore them just fine. The tie strings are very long and will accommodate lots of body types. As far as the material goes, I don't know what it's made of. It's a canvas-y type material. Water slides off of it, but I used to wipe sticky lotion bottles clean on my aprons for guests, and the material was absorbent enough to take that. Some kind of synthetic blend I guess. Hope that helps. :)
