I did some research and I may be wrong, but....... 417=10k
GS= gold shell (basically plated)

From i get GS is supposed to mean gold standard.

Gold Shell is usually spelled out on jewelry, never seen gs as an abbreviation for gold shell. I would guess GS is a makers mark.

Thanks for your input. I'm with ya on this one. I have looked for 3 days and have seen many things saying its either gold standard or the makers mark.

It is marked 417 and that means 10k gold. I don't know what more i can tell you all about this necklace. sorry

I have been dealing in gold for a while and have NEVER seen "GS" used to indicate "Gold Shell." People who are saying that on here are probably trying to cast skepticism on this to drive down the bidding. Here's a link to a source where someone tests a "417 GS" as solid 10k gold: http://www.bullionstacker.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2330

This item is making more of a hassle for me than i expected. I will probably just keep it and give the credits back. we payed alot for this necklace and even though its broke i am not going to give it away. do you people always give the sellers such a hard time??

798 is giving it away. i need more credits than that for a "GOLD" necklace.

there are way to many answers to keep guessing.

via its broken you should be able to take a sharp knife or nail file and scratch it and see if you can see silver under the gold coloring. that would answer a lot! but i didnt find the gs means gold over silver. i got it meant the jewelers signature... hummm
Mar 24th, 2011 at 12:17:19 PM PDT by

just because its broken i do not want to start scratching it.

sorry, i was just saying. don't worry!! its all good! i agree, if you don't want it don't bid :) simple as that...
