In Christianity, the crown of thorns was woven of thorn branches and placed on Jesus Christ during the events leading up to the his crucifixion. It was one of the instruments of the Passion, employed by Jesus' captors both to cause him pain and to mock his claim of authority. It is mentioned in the Canonical gospels of Matthew (27:29), Mark (15:17), and John (19:2, 5) and is often alluded to by the early Church Fathers, such as Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and others.
In later centuries, relics believed by many to be all or part of the Crown of Thorns have been venerated.

Dear Lord,
I am grieved when I consider Thy sad condition
when Thou wore the Crown of Thorns upon Thy holy Head.
I desire to withdraw the thorns
by offering to the Eternal Father
the merits of Thy Wounds for the salvation of sinners.
I wish to unite my actions
to the merits of Thy Most Holy Crown,
so that they may gain many merits,
as Thou hast promised.
