During WW2, a shortage of nickel forced the US Mint to use silver to make 'nickels'.
The silver nickels are distinguished by a large mint mark on the reverse, enabling the coins to be easily separated after the war. Some 1942 nickels and all '43-'45 nickels contain 35% silver.
