Description

The listing, Heirloom Clary Sage Seeds - Medicinal Herb (organically grown) has ended.

20 seeds. (please note I SHIP ON MONDAYS only)

This biennial blooms summer to early fall. 3' - 4' tall. Likes full sun yet will tolerate some shade. Can tolerate some cold but is only hardy to Zone 6 and possibly protected areas of Zone 5. Does nicely in partial shade in hotter climates.

Attracts honeybees and other pollinators.

Purplish blue flowers grow in tall bushy spires and are strongly scented with a high resin content. The entire plant releases a pleasant fragrance in the garden.

Both leaves and flowers are edible.

Flowers are have a sweet nectar with an unusual aromatic flavor. They are often candied or dipped in batter and fried as a delicious fritter.

Leaves can grow to be 6-8" dish size and can be used in cooking. They are very mild and do not have the common sage flavor that a garden sage has.

A common dish served In Victorian times was that of the whole, large leaves dipped in four and egg then
sautéed til golden brown.

A delicious tea is made from both the leaves and flowers which has a calming, uplifting effect.

Clary Sage is best known for its therapeutic properties; antidepressant, antiphlogistic, anti-spasmodic, aphrodisiac, deodorant, emmenagogue, hypotensive, nervine, sedative, tonic and uterine.

100% organically grown. I use only organic compost and fertilizers. NO chemicals or pesticides ever used in my garden!

Thanks for checking out my listing! Happy Bidding! :)

Well, that is interesting. I have grown Clary Sage for years in Northern California and I experience it to be a very well contained plant with a polite root & seed system. It neither crowds nor shows signs of taking over the garden and I find it companions well with the surrounding plants. It does however, produce abundant seed from its prolific flowering stalks, which are best harvested if you wish to prevent it from re-seeding.

I am in Arizona and setting up a contained and raised bed garden. Do you think I could make it work in pots?

I have grown them in pots and they set out small stalks of flowers to my surprise, yet because their tendency is to grow quite large and quickly (6' tall, 4' wide) they outgrew the pots fast. They would probably do fine in a large half barrel or the like, with lots of room to grow. They can be cut back at the end of the season as well.
