Will the tuner give you the sound of a note…lets say A…or does it only pick up sound?

This will tune your guitar it picks up sound, so lets say you strum A there will be a mater letting you know how close you are a green light will show if your right on. Also you can calibrate it.

Yes you can, I looked on google, people have used it and all agree that the chromatic tuner is a good one to use for violins. You may want to google it for yourself just to read blogs and info from other people to make sure it is something you want. Thanks
