You never ever get the full amount of memory on memory cards and such. There are actually "system" files on it so it will work properly. So...256mb would actually be correct. Example...I just placed a 2GB card in my phone. I know it is "blank" but it says that a total of 864kb have been used and I have an available space of 1.8GB.

its the same for any and everything that has memory even though its advertised as 256mb or 8 gb its and brand new you have the files. this goes for Xbox 360, PS3, Phones,Laptops,Desktops etc.

It's 256. It's confusing at first, but usually memory sizes go by 8 (usually doubled). 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and so on. :)
I think it has to do with the common smallest part being a bit. 8 bits = 1 byte, after 1,000 it goes to mega(bytes), then gigabytes, terabytes, etc. Fun stuff.
