In the 1950's the dies for these coin were prone to cracking over time.

This is one variety of errors that was created.

The BIE error gets it's name from a crack in the die that creates what looks like the letter "I" between the B and E in LIBERTY.

Other varieties include a filled in D mint mark, filled in 5 in the date, filled in B in LIBERTY, and the die crack created I between other letters in LIBERTY
