Questions & Comments
Does the Febreeze come with? Lol! I'm kidding. Very cool! Watching for now
Yes I agree, probably MAYAN....and yes the Mexican artisans, and craftsmen are without a doubt among the most well trained and skilled as it is an art passed down through generations! Fabulous auction! F&W!
Couple questions. Is this wood? And is there any markings maybe a signature mark? Also do you think it may have been hand carved? Thank you for any info.
Yes it is wood the photo of the back gives a better view of the wood. I could not find any obvious markings and It is definitely hand carved. Thanks so much I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!
I have so enjoyed this auction & bravo to stevenwalker10297 for preserving a wonderful tradiiton of carvers. Your work is fantastic & I hope this skill stays for many generations to come. I am sooo excited to see how this ends even more than my own auctions..lol..You should give a class called "how to find super cool stuff at estate sales 101" no joke :)
Yes thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts and comments:) You are so sweet to compliment me!! I just look on craigslist to find estate sales I try to shop a few times a week at resale stores and I just look for interesting things!! I am from the Midwest and when I moved here to Seattle I was so surprised at what people just get rid of.. LOL these people have no idea what a struggling economy is:) Have a wonderful weekend!!
Just thought I'd let you know. We carve walrus tusk ivory on my father's side of the family in Anchorage. My Uncle Stan carved 2 Healing heart Totem poles for children lost from drugs and alcohol. There are wonderful videos of these being carved under the direction of him. The carvers from all over Alaska worked on these. Uncle Stan selected the cedar poles and did a great deal of the carving before the community joined in. I am proud of my heritage and can tell you that some of the finest carvers come from Alaska.
Awwweee that is so cool. I believe I have met your wife before she helped out with a carved soapstone walrus auction about a month ago:) Thanks so much for keeping tradition alive!!
I am a carver from a long line of carvers. My uncle Stan Marsden is a Master Carver. He is Chief of the Killer Whale Clan of the (Tshimsian) Tribe from Canada, but a member of the only reservation in Alaska, Metlakatla. This is an island located on the Southeast tip of Alaska, known also as Annette Island. He is world famous for carving totem poles. The carving you have is South Pacific.
I have a dream to visit Alaska a will definitely have to see some carving work if I can ever make it up that way. I just love living in the Northwest there are some many interesting cultures to learn about:) Fanned you!!
i see this before or almost the same in survival on tv,was like the immunity item, dont remenber if was on an island on america or hawaii, but for the dress i think is a mayan priest
Good auction! As a enrolled tribal member, I truly appreciate your honesty, Jennifer, in not professing to know what this items is....or touting it as truly Native (North) American....which technically it IS even if it is from South or Central America! Been watching this auction just cuz it is fun! Pilamaya! Diane
Thanks I think you taught me a lesson sometime last year :) LOL Now when in doubt I try to guess but that is it!! You look beautiful in your picture I love Native American jewelry. I am also a fan.
Yeah, it's got an Aztek or mayan feel to it, probably not old enough for toltek or olmec. Note that the warrior (for such I judge him to be) is KNEELING, as before a priest, which pretty much gets rid of the Native American connection, and maybe even the polynesian possibilities...neither were really into warrior priests like the central and south American indians were. That's my best guess! Regardless of origin, it's definitely a STRIKING AND EXCITING piece, worthy of anyones collection (I'd certainly like it in MINE!), and One Heck of a Fine Auction!! BRAVO! JENNIFER!!
Thanks so much I value your opinion very much. I know Native American stuff is a real passion for you so I am so glad you chimed in. Good luck to you!!! You are so sweet thanks I needed some positivity today LOL
Oh so cool! Hawaiin or Inuit is my guess. Is it light weight as hawaii has that light weight wood they use for carvings. What he is holding in his hand would tell alot too.My friends live in hilo and should ask them. Now i have to know..lol..I think this would be a great mystery to solve....
