Butternut squash is one of the home gardener's favorite winter squashes. Fruits weigh 3-4 pounds and are about 9 inches long when mature. Their skin is light and the flesh is orange with a delicate, sweet taste. These butternut squash seed packets produce plants that mature 105 days from germination.

Butternut squash seeds should be planted in spring after all danger of frost is past. Squash will not germinate in cold or cool soils. Plant 5-6 seeds, 1 inch deep, in a "hill". Space hills 6 feet apart each way. After plants are established, thin to best 3 plants per hill. Hoe or cultivate to kill weeds.

The best way to harvest squash is to cut the stem about 1 inch from the fruit and allow to "cure" outdoors or in a warm, dry place for 7-10 days. Cover if you expect a frost. Store in a cool, dry place for use throughout the winter.
