Description
The listing, old japanese box of coasters (i think... can't read the writing) has ended.
i think it's a set of coasters.... can anyone help me out here? found going through grams stuff stored in attic and seriously... i'm coming to the conclusion my grams was secretly a bit of a hoarder, with all the oddball things i'm finding....but with every new find, brings a smile to my face in remembrance of a truly great woman! RIP Grams.
the bottom is just plain. i don't see any script. all the writing is inside... but idk how to read it lol. i'll try to post a shot of the bottom before auction ends
oooo my... have you seen this before? do you have any info about it that you want to share so peeps can know what they're bidding on? can you translate any of the script by chance?
no i haven't seen this particular set but i do know that the key lock set is very typical of oriental decorative locks.i can't read Japanese but since its in the native language i would guess that it was either made for their market/export.the Japanese always used their own printed matter for a variety of items after WW2.they don't use coasters in Japan,so i don't know.are the rounds made out of cork like a coaster would be?and are they coaster size or larger?if not cork backed are they just decorative paper rounds or are they backed with something else?sorry, more questions than answers:)sheila
nooo... no apology needed. in fact, you brought out very informative things. maybe they are not coasters?? to be honest, it was the first thing that came to mind when i found it but you're right, coasters would have something like cork to absorb liquid; these do not and they are a little bigger sized than regular rounded coasters. these are made out of a possible leather material but now i'm wondering what it would be used for?
I just went thru ninety gazillion boxes on ebay.you never gave measurements so my guesses are solely based on what i saw. the medallions may have nothing to do with the box.lock boxes were tradiyionaly made for what was perceived as something valuable.so.it could be a tea box.calligraphy box for pens, inks etc.if big enough it could be part of a ceremonial tea set or a kimono box.whatever was in it was considered valuable because of the lock.by the way out of the gazillion,i didn't see yours.what is the size anyway.sheila
I had a box almost like that & the writing looked very similar. The box held a Mah Jong set & I always assumed the writing in the box were the instructions on how to play :) The items you thought were coasters may have been score pads(?) lol just guessing though :)
