Dendrocalamus strictus, the Male Bamboo, is native to India. It reaches from 8 to 16 meters high with a diameter of 8 cm. In cooler zones it will be shorter and can be grown in container. The stems have many uses. Bamboos are cultivated for fast growing erosion control, privacy screens, wind breaks, and the bamboo can be trimmed to the desired height. The Male bamboo is pale blue when young and becomes greenish grey or yellow as it ages. The top half of the stems tends to curve. It is in leaf all year. The leaves of the Male bamboo are up to 25 cm long and 3 cm wide with a pointy tip. The inflorescence consists of a large panicle of greenish white flowers. The young shoots are very fast growing, up to 30cm per day. Hardiness zones 9-10, (-5ºC/25ºF, 1ºC/35ºF) in winter. Under -3ºC, the plant dies. It resists to frost and drought, but prefers regions with low humidity.
Bamboos are not particular when it comes to soil type. Most importantly, the soil must be well-drained and rich, it doesn’t grow in waterlogged soil. Bamboos can also tolerate full sun or partial shade. They have average water needs. Keep the soil moist.
Germination -- Surface sow as soon as possible at about 20°C. Grow in a lightly shaded place. Do not allow the to dry out. Germination usually takes place fairly quickly, it
can take 3-6 months, maybe more, so be patient & don't give up.

Unless these are a rare once in a life time seeds. Some bamboo does once in their life span produce seed but it is rare. Most are rhizome Grown. I'd be interested to get the name of the type... I work at a bamboo nursery in CA. Always looking.

Yes I ordered these bamboo seeds online because I really wanted to grow some. Mine have just sprouted, it took about a month or so. I can go back and look at my orders and find out where I ordered these from if you are interested. I don't remember right off hand because I order garden, plant & flower seeds from several different places :)
That sounds like a fun job, Id love to have my own gardening place someday!! Do you like working there?
