In May of 1776, General George Washington, along with two members of the Continental Congress, appeared on the doorstep of a Philadelphia seamstress by the name of Elizabeth "Betsy" Ross. They asked if she could make a flag according to a design they had provided. By June of that year, she presented her creation to General Washington, and the American flag flew above the young country for the first time. Although it has evolved from the original circle of 13 stars, the "Stars and Stripes" has come to symbolize American strength and perseverance in its unending pursuit of freedom for all.
