This beautiful item is called a "Mezuzah" inside contains a scroll with handwritten chapters from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21 which is hung on the right upper frame of your doorpost and all other inside doors as well. Some think its for good luck or to bless the house but its original meaning is to make a public declaration of ones jewish identity. When you enter you touch the mezuzah and then kiss your hand to remind you to think about what you are bringing inside your house -is it a proper book or magazine? Proper food? etc. The case has no significance it could be plastic etc and the one in your photo is not old its just made to look that way. The are checked every 3 years and if the parchment is torn cracked etc you need to replace it so the chances of it being really old are not likely. People take them off when they move to prevent anything happening to it if left behind and then you have 30 days to put them on your doors when you move into your new home.office etc. They can be screwed on or double stick taped etc. Some people think the nicer their mezuzah the more blessed they will be thats why you see so many heavy ornate ones but that simply is not true. Good Luck with this auction and if someone plans to hang it- make sure its checked first or it is invalid. A beautiful item.

The chapters are handwritten on a fine parchment paper easily worn from the sun and other weather conditions since its on the outside of the door. (Mezuzah means "doorpost" They most likely had it checked ( every 3 years or so) and found it needed to be replaced and probably never got around to it or just bought a new one and thats how it ended up at the flea market!

I was going to bid, but I didnt want to knock somebody out of getting this that is Jewish, because I am not, and I think it would do better in a Jewish home.

An elder at our church gave us for the house we just bought 3 months ago and ours is the new plaque style Mazuzah with the scripture actually written on the outside, There is also a piece of paper that is placed behind with the plaque with the hebrew of those verses written on it - you place it at eye level on your doorpost/next to your door so people see it when they enter- it is a blessing that is declared over your home and shows that those who live there honor God. I am not Jewish, but as it is written in the word, this can be practiced by all. It is common to see one at every outside doorway. I do wish it came with the scroll, when getting the tube kind, the scroll should come with it-but the piece itself is very very nice!

Saw this picture and title and was going to give you some info on this, but chocolatenow did a MUCH better job than I would. I do believe that they are usually put up vertically or if the doorframe is wide enough diagonally slanted with the top toward the room the door opens into. Good luck!
Fanned you ;)

Fanned you! I don't have enough points available to bid anymore, so I'm going to have to drop out of this one. Whoever gets this mazuzah is lucky, even if it isn't able to be blessed and used like it should be by a Jew. I think it would make an interestingly beautiful reminder to someone, every time they walked in their door, that God is the one true God.

con't
“If, then you obey the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day, loving ADONAI your God and serving God will all your heart and soul, I will grant the rain for your land in season, the early rain and the late. You shall gather in your new grain and wine and oil I will also provide grass in the fields for your cattle and thus you shall eat your fill. Take care not to be lured away to serve other gods and bow to them. For ADONAI's anger will flare up against you, and ADONAI will shut up the skies so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce; and you will soon perish from the good and that ADONAI is giving you. Therefore impress these my words upon your very heart; bind them as a sign upon your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead, and teach them to your children reciting them when you stay at home

And when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up; and inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates to the end that you and
your children may endure, in the land that ADONAI swore to your ancestors to give to them, as long as there is a heaven over the earth”. (Deuteronomy 11:13-21)

I apologize if anyone reading this takes offense-It is not meant to preach or persuade..... I included the information similar to what you would learn from "antique roadshow" etc so you would know the history behind your item.

I thought this would be interesting for you... This is the english translation from the torah that is handwritten on the parchment which is usually inside.
Translation of the Shema:
“Shema Yisrael ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad”; “Hear, O Israel! ADONAI is our God, ADONAI is One”.
“You shall love ADONAI your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign upon your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead; inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates”. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

It can still be used with the new scroll inserted. Its possible its made of sterling silver with real stones (lapiz?)you might want to take it to a jeweler it could be a very valuable item. Check out http://shop.thejewishmuseum.org. maybe you can see a similar one there.
