Actually there is no one person G. Whitman. Don't know where you found him but he doesn't have a wiki page. There are however many landscape oils signed G. Whitman but they are from different artists that were commissioned to paint them. Some are very good and selling for hundreds of dollars, the highest I've ever seen had a selling price of one thousand but again that was the asking price. There are many more not quite so good selling from 80 to 200 hundred dollars. These paintings are very popular but will not increase in value like museum quality paintings. But I want it, so be prepared for a run.
yes I know that there was mention that he cpmmissioned others to duplicate the pictures. I have done a few oil paintings as well in my life and I being an artist would never do something like that but who knows that doesn't even sound ethical or legal.
This is the only thing you will find on google or anywhere else about G. Whitman " Known for: the authenticity of this artist is questionable." But that is just a tasty tidbit it does not diminish the value of the painting
Many of the greatest masters of all time had apprentices work on their paintings. Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Manet, etc.etc.etc. Put some of your work on here. I would love to see it and bid on it.
It is a signed painting one of many versions of the same location that he visited on vacations on many occassions for some years that it showed on the google search sight. There was a mention on one of the sights he may have had some connection also with the people that had the whitman chocolates in milwaukee wi around that same era of time in history as well and his paintings may of been simply a hobby of his to remember a favorite spot he spent some time at on occassion.
There are a lot of them that are very, very similar. But different seasons, slightly different angles. Mary is a painter herself so I'm sure hers is an oil, not a print.
