This is actually a copy of one of the first medals. They were produced for number of reasons. usually to commemorate a particular person or point in our history. Thomas Jefferson has several made and given to Lewis and Clark to give the people they would meet on their trip Westward. That would be a really nice medal to have.

Yes it is repuclia the real ones are super rare and almost impossibul to find. This come with a book explaning all about it. It is a collector's item.
