Winner gets 7 Four O Clock seeds
Scientific Name: Mirabilis jalapa (Nyctaginaceae) Mix-Colors
Common Name: Four O'Clock
(a.k.a. Beauty-Of-The-Night, Clavillia, Marvel-of-Peru)
Height in inches: 24-36" in poor soil; 48-72" in fertile soil
Blooming Season: Summer through Late Fall
Requirements: Likes full sun but will tolerate some shade. We would suggest planting these seeds in well-drained and fertile soil for optimum growth. They can become shrub-like in good conditioned soil. You might want to consider planting these seeds to create a temporary hedge. Surface sow in the spring after the last frost and allow approx. 10-12 day for germination at 70-80F.
A native to Peru, these multi-colored flowers get their name because they open in the afternoon at 4 o'clock, give or take an hour, and remain open most of the night. They have a lovely fragrant scent that might get you to slow down and stroll through the garden more often. Four O'Clocks are reasonably drought tolerant as they have a thick carrot-liketaproot which helps them survive colder climates. However you might want to dig up these tubers for the winter if you live in Zones 3-8. Because of its hardiness, and because they reseed very easily, you might have to manage the growth of these aggressive growers. We believe that these flowers are best grown as perennials in Zones 9-10 but may act like Annuals in colder climates.
