Description

The listing, Civil War Era Key has ended.

In 1864, Union forces under command of Gen. David Hunter invaded the town of Lexington Virginia where they burned the Virginia Military Institute(VMI), the Virginia governor's home, vandalized and looted Washington College, and Union soldiers looted and robbed homes all over the community of food and valuables. The key was found at one of the Union campsites and probably went to a jewelry box or small lock box taken by the troops from one of the local homes or businesses. The small key is a little over one inch long and has hallow tube above the metal prongs. Along with the key the winner of the auction will also receive a pamphlet about Hunter's Raid. This is your chance to own a Civil War relic during this 150th anniversary.
Questions & Comments
Original
Today Lexington VA is the home of VMI, Washington and Lee University (the Washington College before the Civil War), the last home and gravesite of Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson and last home and final resting place of Gen. Robert E. Lee. After the Civil War, Lee turned down many higher paying offers to become President of Washington College and lived out his last years in the community. A trip to Virginia is not complete without a stop in Lexington, the Shrine of the South.
