the way to test for bakelite is as follows.you can use the cleaner 409.spray some on a peper towel and rub the bracelet with it.one swipe is enough is plenty.if the towel turns green it is bakelite.also,if you have a dollar store in your area get some awesome cleaner.spray that on a towel and rub over the item.if the towel turns orange it is bakelite.you can also use the metal polish SIMICHROME ,it too will turn orange.but the awesome is the best value for what you want.the rub test is out of date and not as relable as the above.this is what we use in our antique store.hope this helps.
I may have to do that. I purchased them a few years back at a antique gift shop and I was told they were bakelite. Do you know what I need to do to have them tested? And thanks for the help and bringing it to my attention. I have another bracelet just like this one listed, just a different color, do you think they are the same?
I agree this looks more like lucite. To test for Bakelite: Rub the bracelet really hard in one small spot with your thumb, until it gets very warm... then smell it right away. If it smells like burning rubber, then it is Bakelite. :)
Not getting a rubber smell so I'm guessing Lucite. Thanks for the insight. Let me ask u something, what is the appeal between the two? Is it just because of the time between the two materials and when they were manufactured? Making Bakelite harder to come by?
Great question. Possibly Bakelite is more expensive because it was the first plastic ever made, pre-dating celluloid and lucite. But they are all collectible and can be very valuable. Bakelite jewelry is so coveted, and collectors don't like to part with their pieces, so that's another reason for its high value. :)
