Description

The listing, Antique J.C. Higgins Casting Reel *w/original box* fishing reel & box in great condition 16 pictures has ended.

Incredible details put into the engravings on the body of the reel! This very old fishing reel is in *outstanding* condition, as well as it's original box. Hard to find an item like this with it's original box in such great shape.

This is the J.C. Higgins model 537/3101.
It was made exclusively for SEARS, ROEBUCK &CO..

The box says:
"J.C. HIGGINS
NO BACK-LASH
A new reel that provides *THUMBLESS* casting when adjusted properly to weight of lure and style of cast.
J.C. HIGGINS FISHING TACKLE IS SOLD ONLY BY SEARS, ROEBUCK &CO"

During the period this item was being sold at Sears there was no *WALMART* or any stores like it. SEARS, ROEBUCK was the place! Ask anybody who grew up during this time where they bought their sporting goods and I'll bet they say SEARS :)

Be sure to use the enlarge image feature to get a good look at the incredible details on the fish engravings. This is a very nice looking antique reel.
I think at the time this was being marketed the casting reel style was fairly new.
Whoever wins this one is going to be very, very pleased.
Thanks for looking and be sure to check my other listings. I have a couple of ~old~ fishing lures I will be listing soon.

anybody ever heard of pocket knives made by CARL SCHMIDT SOHN SOLINGEN and it has a little house with 2 crosses on the roof as a trademark. Grabbed one at the flea market today for $2.00 :) Wood handle, cork screw, was a 2 blade but one broke of. still a nice looking knife. Not sure what to do with it :) Anybody knows what they're worth feel free to chime in.

I have a very similar reel complete with box from the South Bend Bait Company that my uncle gave me when I was a kid. Had had it in his barn for years. Think it needs a companion :) Great Looking Reel!!!

This is what WIKIPEDIA has on J.C. Higgins:
"J. C. HigginsFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

J.C. Higgins Model 20 - 12 Gauge Shotgun - Originally sold by SearsFrom 1908 until 1961, Sears, Roebuck & Company sold a wide variety of sporting goods and recreational equipment, including bicycles, golf clubs, rifles, shotguns, and revolvers under the brand name "J. C. Higgins." These products were well made and were popular with the company's historical core of rural and working-class consumers.

Like many other Sears products, the Sears firearms were originally made by major firearm manufacturers. The Model 20 was produced by High Standard Arms, as was the Model 88 revolver.

The J.C. Higgins brand for Sears sporting goods was replaced with the Ted Williams brand. Many of the more durable J.C. Higgins products are still available as second hand items.

The brand name, J. C. Higgins, was based on a real person, John Higgins who was a Sears employee. He moved from his birth country of Ireland to the United States in his late teens and began working for Sears in 1898. He spent his entire working career with Sears and was Vice President for the company for a period of time. He was actually born with no middle name but the Sears Co. presented the idea of labeling their sporting good line with his name and saw it more presentable labeling the brand as J.C Higgins. He worked with the company until his retirement as head bookkeeper in 1930. Higgins died in 1950. His expertise in sporting goods or sports is unknown."
That was take from wikipedia to describe J.C. Higgins involvement with Sears

50's. Not positive, but my Mothers late husband got it when he worked at Sears. Which I believe was in the 50's. I'll see what I can find out. There is nothing on the box so... Do you know anything about Higgins stuff or this item you would like to share?
