It doesn't seem much harder. Just unique limbs and a 'hat' layer for the whole body.

I messed around with SkinCraft which has basic support then compiled several images in GIMP but I'm not completely happy with the results

I normally use photoshop when I make skins, but that's my personal preference.

Makes sense, ive tried making a custom skin but have gotten frustrated. I'm not a great artist.
