The reason this was first made is to stop scratches made by your door hitting another in a parking lot or driveway when your door opens into another car... Unfortunately the ones with this edge trim were not the ones that were opening there doors into someone elses... I have some and it makes the car look nice and does make a tighter seal on the door.

I had a car once that it was on the doors, hood and trunk. It does a good job at dressing up a normal looking car and making it designer.
