Description

The listing, *** INDIANA GEODES *** MED. FLAT RATE BOX FULL! has ended.

In honor of Earth Day, I offer you something I normally never part with - my GEODES! My collection of Indiana Geodes are all shapes, sizes, colors and have a wide variety of crystals inside. I collected all of these myself and love love love them very much… but am willing to share a few. ;-)

The pix are just as I brought them in, still muddy and need of a wash. Some will be whole, some will be broken with crystals exposed, some will be very small and a few could be as big as a baseball… or bigger! I will post pix of clean ones and start adding to the box in the tomorrow.

I also have some Ocean Floor Fossil Stone. If you are interested, leave a comment when you bid so I can add some!

I will start with 5 nice geodes and for every 100 credits bid, I add 2 more until the 70lb limit on shipping is reached. I won’t fill up the box just for fun, YOU need to bid to keep adding them. Bid low and you get a box with a few stones and lots of bubble wrap. Bid HIGH and you will get a med. box FULL of a wide variety of AWESOME Geodes including some with crystals! Geodes can contain Crystal Quartz, Calcite, Amethyst, Citrine, Smithsonite, Jasper, Hematite, Marcasite, etc. You never know unless you open them!!

-I have TWO auctions like this, Small and Medium. This is the MEDIUM!! Bid on one or both, but get in on it NOW as I highly doubt I will EVER repeat this!!

PLEASE READ!
-You MUST be verified. If you aren't and don't get verified within 7 days of bidding/winning, or don't follow other Listia rules, I will relist and keep the points.
-If you don't reply CORRECTLY on the AUCTION LINK within 7 days, I will relist and keep the points. YOU must click on the Send Address button IN the auction and contact ME with your name, email and address using the auction link ONLY. This is both a Listia rule and my rule. Don't wait for me for me for me to do it or to remind you every day.
-I can accept Paypal ONLY!

Thanks, the only "gem" found here is crawfish, or you may know them as crayfish.

Well those are pretty tasty but don't make good decorations for the mantle. lol! Surely there is something that is found there - most states have some gem or mineral they are known for. How about cool shells?

What a cool auction! Geez, I wish I knew there were geodes in Indiana! I lived up there from '92 - '96 and I would've been geode hunting the whole time if I knew. I thought you could only find them out west, where I got the geodes I own - picked from a giant pyramid-shaped pile in Arizona a few decades ago. What part of IN do you find these in?

Hello and welcome! For the most part they are only found in the Southern part of the state. Some other states might have small amounts of them too but they are like weeds here, it's like they grow faster than the garden! lol... I've been a rock geek since I was a kid so living here is a joy to me, to be able to find such things in my own back yard. Happy Happy Joy Joy! lol

Where did you live when you were here?

lol. I think it was a Ford more than likely. Wish I still had it!! They tell me stories that I wrecked this car once, in the time before seat belts and I was standing on the front sit between my parents and just decided I should grab the wheel and drive us into a fence. LLOL!! Of course I was so little I don't remember... I don't remember this picture being taken... but I DO remember always coming inside with a handful of rocks every day. :-)
Thanks for being here and good luck bidding!!

Method 3 of 5: Striking Method
Crack Open a Geode Step 7.jpg
1Strike geode with another larger geode. This only really works if you control the striking rock in the palm of your hand. Only use this method on small, golf-ball-sized geodes.
Method 4 of 5: Cast Iron Pipe Snap Cutter
Crack Open a Geode Step 8.jpg
1Use a cast iron pipe snap cutter. This common plumber's tool can aid you in splitting a geode symmetrically, that is, into two equal halves. Wrap the tool's bicycle-type chain around your geode.
Crack Open a Geode Step 9.jpg
2Feed the chain into the tool securely around geode.
Crack Open a Geode Step 10.jpg
3Pull down the handle to apply equal tension around the geode. It should crack smoothly all around. (This is the least destructive method that displays a geode in a natural form.)
Method 5 of 5: Diamond-Blade Saw Method
Crack Open a Geode Step 11.jpg
1Use a lapidary diamond-blade cutting saw to slice the geode open, or into halves. (Note that oil can damage the interior of some geodes.[3])

Oh cool, I didn't know about the pipe cutter and it probably wouldn't of occurred to me!! Now that I might try!! I hope to be able to afford a good lapidary saw someday or at least find someone nearby who can do some cuts for me... THANK YOU so much for sharing all this info with us! You Rock!!! lol :-)

Well, that explains why I never saw any. I lived in the NE area of the state, in Ft Wayne and Huntingdon.

To answer one of the questions someone else asked about opening them, the best way is with a diamond wet saw. It will not harm what's inside and will give a beautiful, even cut.

Yea, I don't think they are found in the Northern areas much, if at all. Probably other cool stones/minerals/gems there but I have not idea what. lol

Okay, this may be a dumb question, if it is, forgive me cause here in Louisiana we don't have that kind of stuff. Anyway, here it goes....how do you break open the rock?
+1
May 10th, 2014 at 3:49:51 PM PDT by
Original
Hi Jackie! To be honest, I have never broken one open. Some people wrap them in canvas and just whack with a hammer but if its solid, that's just gonna hurt your arm. LOL!! I've been told that you can use a flat chisel and hammer and just make a score mark all the way around one and then you should be able to make it crack down the middle but I have never tried that... might though. Or you can slice them with a lapidary saw if you can get access to one. I LOVE it when I find one already broken with crystals exposed tho - that totally makes my day!!!

What gems does one find in Louisiana? There must be something interesting there!!

maybe just 1 or 2 big ones, I meant the outside having the colors, the hollow ones aren't heavy.. do you have any pictures of ones you already broke?
Apr 29th, 2014 at 9:37:38 AM PDT by
Original
The variety of colors that I find are more or less already displayed in the photos that are posted. Most are just brown (until you break them), some do have a slightly reddish color sometimes but on the outside they pretty much look like Geodes. Some are really smooth you don't wanna put 'em down, and some are so rough you can't hold it for long! Some are really white because the outer stone covering has eroded thin - I think those are pretty cool. And Sure, I have LOTS of photos but the new photos show what is actually going into the boxes so no one gets confused AND I will have more photos to post here today! Just gimme a minute... I'm still gimping around from all the yard work we did over the weekend! lol ;-)

Method 2 of 5: Chisel Method
Crack Open a Geode Step 4.jpg
1Take a rock or masonry flat chisel, hold at top center of rock, then strike with a hand-held sledge hammer. Tap lightly, as to score the rock only.
Crack Open a Geode Step 5.jpg
2Rotate rock a bit, then strike again to create a line around the circumference of the stone.
Crack Open a Geode Step 6.jpg
3Repeat, as necessary, until the rock splits open. Patience is key; if the geode is hollow, it will probably take a few minutes of gentle scoring to open it, but if the geode is solid, it'll take longer.[2]

Met a neighbor while out hunting in a ditch one afternoon and he told me about this method... I haven't tried yet though but have a few that I think are good candidates. He also said he would drill or chisel a few holes in the huge ones and plants hens and chickens in them!!! I don't know if I would do that as hens and chickens are plants that spread and the Geode will crack eventually, but it would be kinda pretty! We hope to make some curtain rod finals out of a few pair - if we can find someone at the rock hound club with the right kind of drill! Won't that be a cool touch for a house full of and surrounded by Geodes and gems? :-)

Oh yeah, you should be able to find TONS of stones at the shore. Lake Michigan Agate, which is a gorgeous red, is what I would be looking for. And tons of Petrosky stones too! I only have ONE of those and would love to have some more. It's warmer now - maybe you should go rock hunting too! lol... I'm sure there are other things in that area to find as well but I know those two stones should be quite plentiful on the lake!

This is for Jackie448 and everyone else... "How to open a Geode" 5 Ways...

If you've discovered a geode (a rounded rock formation with crystals or banding inside), you'll want to crack it open as safely and neatly as possible. Every geode is unique, and could hold anything from clear, pure quartz crystals to rich purple amethyst crystals, or perhaps agate, chalcedony, or minerals like dolomite. Fortunately, there's more than one way to crack open a geode...
Ad

Steps
Crack Open a Geode Step 1.jpg
1Put on safety glasses before attempting to open a geode.
Ad

Method 1 of 5: Sledge Hammer Method
Crack Open a Geode Step 2.jpg
1Put the geode in a sock and set on the ground.
Crack Open a Geode Step 3.jpg
2Take a small sledge hammer or a rock hammer (preferably not a construction hammer, such as a claw hammer) and strike the top center of the geode. A couple of strikes might be required to fully crack open this rock. This is likely to result in the geode fragmenting into more than two pieces, but it is the most suitable method for kids, though not recommended for particularly valuable/rare geodes.[1]

Apr 29th, 2014 at 12:54:38 AM PDT by

Yes, yes and no and I wouldn't know if they are colorful inside if they aren't broken. :-) I do not have any that are obviously hollow, that rattle or anything like that. Wish I did!!
It is time to show you guys some bigger ones BUT most of them won't fit in the small box and if I put in more than a few bigger ones, the medium box will be full.
Does everyone want me to do that??

I tend to leave the ones that are whole whole and be content with the ones we find that are already broken... But it would be nice to have a saw to make slices with! I would love to have table tops and wind chimes and whatnot all made out of the beautiful striped slices of WHATEVER wonderful mineral/gem is inside these things. I just love em!!
