The Constellation was also called "Old Ironside". Seems that Cannon ball were reported to bounce off her deck. Now, this may sound really strange until you realize that the USS Constellation was not the first US Navy ship but it was the first Ship Commissioned and bought by the US Navy. In fact they were in such a hurry for it that legend has it they did not allow the timbers time to cure so she was made "Green" and it is the greenness of her boards that allowed the give and flexibility to deflect cannon balls. Now how much of this is true I am not sure but it does make good story telling.
