Description

The listing, Pincushion Flower (Scabiosa atropurpurea) from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. has ended.

Pincushion Flower (Scabiosa atropurpurea) from the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants at Monticello.
Also known as: Mourning Bride, Mournful Widow, Sweet Scabious or Egypian Rose
Pincushion Flower is a half-hardy annual prized for its bright, double flowerheads that appear on slender, foot-long stalks through the summer months. It is named for the grey pin-like stamens that protrude from the dense "cushion" of petals. The flowers are uncommonly beautiful and appear in mixed shades of purple, blue, white, pink and red. The large blooms make fragrant and long-lasting cut flowers and are butterfly magnets.
Sow the seeds in a sunny site after the last frost in spring in a well-drained, protected position.
When Thomas Jefferson requested roots and bulbs of the "Mourning bride" from his friend and neighbor, Isaac Coles, in 1811, he may have been referring to the Pincushion Flower. Also known as Scabiosa because of its skin-healing medicinal qualities, and Mourning bride because of its association with grieving widows in eighteenth-century England, Pincushion Flower was sold by Philadelphia nurseryman Bernard McMahon in 1804.
