yes..they can be..as they grow you pinch the bottom layers off to promote a height growth..they are just beautiful trees..in the fall after the first major frost all the leaves fall of at the same time so very easy cleanup..i love them..very unique and pretty..the spring..it's wonderful..pretty purplish pink flowers and they round oblong and bowl like with the sweetest smell...i think you will love them
