I have some other wood beads in my bead "stash". I just can't seem to make anything look right when I try using them. But, I'm sure beading is something you just have to learn a little at a time.
I think the best thing is to get some small silver or stardust round beads, maybe 3 or 4mm (be sure they are larger than the holes in the wood beads) and put the silver between each wood bead. I bet that would look pretty danged nice. Check out this listing I have for a Pandora bracelet ... shows wood and silver beads together. http://www.listia.com/auction/1715359. You also could flank each wood bead with a crystal rondelle, then a silver round, etc. Don't get rid of all your wood beads until you try a few things, they make neat jewelry!
Adding small silver beads between other beads makes a huge difference in designs, really makes them sing. If you look at my listings I show many different necklaces I've made, I always use some form of silver between the colored beads.
You are MORE than welcome to use my ideas. I find that, with regular beads, stringing a few beads onto a memory wire or some beading wire and taking some photos really helps to sell them. You don't have to actually make a necklace, just string a few together. I also use my longer headpins to do that. If you look through my listings you'll see how I display a lot of my beads, Pandora and normal!
I have noticed that, and it does help the bidder see the beauty of the bead better. I love the variety of earrings you showed on your headpins listing. They are lovely. I got some great design ideas from them!!
I almost never make earrings because usually I just don't like the designs once I make them, so I make them, take them apart, make them again ... yadda yadda yadda. The ones pictured I thought were nice enough to keep, so go for it! I think one of the most inspiring things is to look at jewelry on the internet or in catalogs or magazines for some great ideas!
I find myself taking things apart alot too. I absolutely love the ones you pictured!! Thanks for all the help and ideas :) I really like some of the designs from Firemountain Gems but alot of those designs are not for beginners and look like they require alot of work and skill.
I have always had a hard time coming up with designs I like. First, I realized you really need to add a bit of metal to make the other beads pop, that's why I keep a good supply of different sizes of round silver beads. Second, I figured out that jewelry looks best when you stick with one color ... mixed color jewelry can be astoundingly beautiful, but trying to duplicate it is really hard. Plus, it makes more sense to keep the color mix monochromatic, matches more outfits!
Most of mine are only one color (sometimes I mix it up by using different shades of the same color). But it is usually that way just because I can't find colors that look great together.
