The listing, Wade & Butcher Sheffield straight razor with case has ended.

For your consideration is this great example of a yesteryear straight razor. Made by Wade & Butcher Sheffield England. This company produced all kinds of straight razors and knives from 1800-1890. So I can say this isn't any newer than 1890. It is in very good condition considering it's age. Probably one of the best condition wise I have ever had and I've had many. I believe this to be ivory as I can see the grain in it under magnification, but it could also be bone. The coloring suggests ivory. The steel/blade is in amazing condition. No rust anywhere. Some discoloration in a few spots, but not rust. The blade still shines like chrome. The blade is stamped CELEBRATED EXTRA HOLLOW GROUND RAZOR with a B inside a circle with a feathered arrow pointing to a Maltese cross. The tang is stamped Wade & Butcher Sheffield with the B in a citcle and arrow pointing at a Maltese cross. The blade has no nicks anywhere. The razor edge is still sharp as the day it was made and not a blemish in it. The handle has not a crack in it, with good color both sides. The rivets and rivet collars are still just like factory. The case is in great shape as well. Not broken, hard and intact. This is a great piece for the collector or those who still use these today. It will give a wonderful close shave. Thanx sasquatch. I would really like to use these for shaving, but busted up both arms last August so they don't work well anymore. I'd be afraid of taking off my face or nose lol. I've heard you get an excellent shave. My grand father always used a straight razor. I remember him mixing the cream in a cup.

I use a badger hair brush and almond shave soap. I also like to make three passes while shaving: with the grain, across the grain, then against the grain. I've only nicked myself once, and the cause was a fly landing on my ear. But, I have styptic pencils for just such an occasion.

If I win this item, I'll restore it and will definitely try a shave with it.

I've been told the straight razor shave is the closet possible and the best in the end. When you shave as you stated, do you relather each time. I wish my hands and arms worked better. I really want to experience this. I will see if in my area there is a barber who does this.

I strop the razor and then lather my face between passes. Before lathering I also use a hot (as hot as I can stand) washcloth to go over my face to clean off any old lather and soften the whiskers up again. The third pass (against the grain) is the trickiest. It is very easy to nick yourself if you're not careful. I'd suggest using with the grain shaving until you're comfortable handling the razor. Then as your confidence and skills improve progressing into using two "passes" (with the grain followed by across the grain). Once you're comfortable and confidant with that, then try (if you really want/need to) adding in "against the grain". Some people don't need to, but I have very coarse whiskers and it's the only way I wind up with a smooth shave.

As a note about using the washcloth between passes. It also adds a little more moisture into the skin so that the lather doesn't dry out too quickly. If my lather dries out, then I wipe it off and lather up again.
