1 Planting ideas and location. Planting Gladiolas involves digging a 3 to 5 inch deep hole for each corm after the soil has warmed to at least 45-55 degrees F. Place the corm into the bottom of the hole and cover with soil. Gladiolas will grow in almost any soil. However, they do prefer moist, well drained soil in full sun.
* 2Usage. Gladiolas reach heights of 1 to 5 feet. Standard sizes are 2 to 5 feet while the miniature varieties are usually 1 to 3 feet tall. They are used for backdrops, fence lines, and cut flowers.
3 Diseases and pests. Gladiolas are susceptible to fusarium rot, rust, dry rot, and grey mold (Botrytis). Aphids, thrips, and corm borer are the most common insect pests. All of these symptoms and conditions may be treated with organic or synthetic pesticides as needed.
4 Hardiness. Gladiolas, are only hardy at USDA Hardiness Zone 9 or warmer for year round growth. However, they will grow as an annual in all zones during the summer months. Dig the corms before a hard freeze. Cut the tops to one inch above the corm. Allow the corms to air dry and store at 35 to 40 degrees F.
