We still don't have 'paper' money, it's main ingredient from what I've been told by 2 friends who've worked in mints say cotton is a main product, when you leave a piece of paper in your clothes & you leave a dollar bill which 1 survives & is still useable ? the dollar bill.
I will say you havea very nice piece of history here.
It's been almost 10 yrs since I've seen the likes of these, & it was in a pre/&civil war town in WV.
I'd sure be biddin on it if my credits were up to it.
very nice auction piece you have .!

I am really into trivia on various subjects, & I looked up more info on US money just to see what was out there, so I just figured I would share what I came across here in case others found it as interesting a subject as myself.

When was paper money first printed in the U.S.? The U.S. Department of the Treasury first issued paper U.S. currency in 1862 to make up for the shortage of coins and to finance the Civil War. There was a shortage of coins because people had started hoarding them; the uncertainty caused by the war had made the value of items fluctuate drastically. Because coins were made of gold and silver their value didn't change much, so people wanted to hang onto them rather than buy items that might lose their value.

So what is money made of? Coins are usually made of copper and another element, such as zinc or nickel. Currency paper is composed of 25 percent linen and 75 percent cotton. Red and blue synthetic fibers of various lengths are distributed evenly throughout the paper. Before World War I these fibers were made of silk.

It wasn't until the Civil War that currency really hit its stride and the government finally found the answer to how is money made that can be worth "its weight." This era did see some currency issues though and a lot of it came in the form of denominations. To finance the war, the Federals started to print the first paper currency since the Revolutionary War. Even though the U.S. Treasury wasn't formed until 1874, it had been overseeing the printing of $5, $10 and $20 bill since 1861. Before 1860, there were 8,000 or so state banks that were circulating their own versions of notes ranging from a half a cent to $20,000! This posed a problem to the federal government and that is one of the lesser known reasons for the Civil War.

Well... Hope everyone get's as big a kick outta that as I did... This is an AWESOME auction !!! Dan
