Six of the special reports contained in this volume of articles concerned with trends in the sciences are related to problems of human population, pollution, and drug and insecticide regulation; two are on astronomy; three report on aspects of psychology and behavior; and there is one report each on marine ecology, atomic physics, Japanese technological growth, and space exploration. One of the two introductory articles surveys the color and form of living coral. The other provides a historical perspective on antipathy toward science. Forty-three articles provide concise summaries of significant scientific and technological work during the 1970 school year. Biographies of Monod (molecular biologist) and Fuglister (oceanographer), a list of scientific award winners, and reports of deaths of noted scientists and engineers are included in the "Men of Science" section.
