As it stands right now, this is a bargain. It normally sells for around 120 dollars. Straight up, as violins go, that's on the very low end of the spectrum in price. However, that doesn't mean it isn't a quality instrument so far as the way it plays. I does mean you won't get the fancy, expensive woods, and things like that, but can be a great instrument and will last if taken care of. Only time can make any violin sound better. They mellow with age. I imagine being brand new, it has a very bright sound. One caveat, first thing you'll want to do is get different strings, the ones from the factory ... well they're not exactly top of the line to say the least. What strings you put on it can be determined by many factors, but I recommend a beginner use the metal strings sometimes called "fiddle" strings, not the expensive and hard to play orchestra style "cat gut" strings. They're actually made from natural fibers from plants, and some have extra additives, they have nothing at all to do with cats, and never have, that's just an expression. Anyway, they're very difficult for beginners to get decent tone from, so don't dash their hopes early by putting that kind of strings on it. decent strings for one should run around 20 bucks, give or take a buck or two. I recommend "Just Strings" strings for instruments is all they sell, and have a wide range to choose from. I'd also recommend getting better rosin, and eventually a better bow. This style of bow costs 12 dollars or so, and is perfectly fine for a while, but you'll go through a lot of them fast in the beginning. Better to get one where you can simply change the bow hairs. However, that too can be rather expensive, depending on what you use.
