we took off the upc symbol but never opened it. from a smoke free home. comes with an attached hard cover which has a hinge on top, can't really see that in the photos, perfect for backpack or purse.

No, it has a working "Alkaline manganese battery (type : 1.5 V (DC) LR1130 (or equivalent) x 1," whatever all of that means. I just copied what it says on the back of the package. The front lets me turn it on and off even though it is completely covered, the clear cover is flexible, just tested it and it went right on and off without any trouble. It also shows a diagram on the package back of how to replace the battery.
