This is hardy, tall, sturdy, dramatic, sun-loving plant produces long blooming, attractive, bright yellow cup shaped flowers that open at twilight or on cloudy days. They are revered by Christians, as the reproductive parts in the center of the flower form a perfect cross. Native Americans used the plant to heal bruises, treat skin problems, asthma, and brewed a cough mixture from the roots. In Wiccan lore, the Evening Primrose is used for Protection and Love, and is associated with the Huntress Diana. The sweetly scented flowers of this magic herb open towards evening and are faintly phosphorescent, which makes evening primrose a great Moon garden plant. Eliphas Levi would place it on his altar for Moon ceremonies. It is also a fairy plant, from which it is said the Fae collect dew to make potions. Blooms are left in entrance ways to request fairy blessings and should you wish to see a fairy, you would eat the flowers. A bunch of five freshly gathered primroses from the water’s edge, placed on a standing stone, is said to open the way to Fairyland. Because the flowers will sometimes open in the morning but not have a scent until the evening, it is used for shapeshifting. Evening Primrose Oil reduces pain and inflammation, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and is used in treating cirrhosis of the liver, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatitis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome. It is commonly taken for premenstrual problems, including tension, abdominal bloating, breast pain, menstrual cramps, and hot flushes.
