I have a really nice gold necklace (not real gold) You don't even have to hassle with trying to get the clasp done up, it doesn't have one. You just stick it around you neck and it stays. I don't know what the strands are made of. There are a bunch of strands put together. I am not doing GIN. I've had this a long time and it's never tarnished
