Description

The listing, 1989 Japan 500 (Five Hundred) Yen Japanese Paulownia Coin **FREE SHIPPING** has ended.

I have learned so much just trying to put together a description for you all on this auction! History and culture are wrapped up in our currency here in the states, and in Japan as well!

This coin came back from Japan in pocket change in the early 1990's. So it is circulated. However, this coin is no longer minted, as Japan changed the design slightly to prevent counterfeiting.

Collectors appreciate the floral themes in Japanese coins, and this coin is a beautiful example. The obverse depicts Paulownia (Princess Tree), a tree commonly grown in Japan and China for ornamental landscapes with it's striking flowers. The wood is also used often in musical instrument production. On the reverse, the value of 500 is flanked by cherry blossoms, another tree Japan is well-known for.

I tried to get decent pictures of the edge on this coin as well, where it reads "Nippon 500". Hopefully this is visible to you.

I only have one coin of this denomination, so watch or bid now if you must have! :) IF you just can't wait to get this, let me know and I will add GIN of 5,555 credits as long as there are no bids already in place.

I do require a Listia approved mailing address, and follow all Listia guidelines. I prefer good communication, so please watch for and reply to messages so there is no confusion. Any questions, please ask!

The header on this listing mentions "Showa." Are you referring to the "Showa Emperor," as Hirohito is posthumously known? Thanks in advance.

In my research on this coin, I found it was listed sometimes as Showa era, sometimes and under Hirohito. I am not well versed in Japanese emperor history, so I didn't catch the connection. You sound like you are more knowledgeable on the subject than I. I hope you found my answer helpful! I would love to hear more on what you know of that place and time in history.

The Japanese often refer to events as having happened during a particular era, rather than in calendar years, as we in the west do. The years of Emperor Hirohito's reign are called the "Showa times," and he is posthumously known as "the Showa Emperor."

That term means "enlightened peace," which seems odd considering what the Japanese were doing during Hirohito's reign, which spanned from the mid-1920's to 1989. Japan invaded China in 1931, and their military behaved brutally until the end of the war in 1945.

This term draws great objections from the Asian countries that were conquered and occupied during those years, like China, Korea, and the Philippines. Those countries still feel that the Japanese have not fully faced the truth about their wartime actions.

Wow! I guess that would explain why some referenced it as Showa, and others just as Hirohito...perhaps based on the individual writing the article, and their view? I appreciate the info so much, and I think for politeness sake, I will remove the word from the auction title. I certainly never meant to offend, but trusted the word that was referenced more often. It really does pay to do your homework!! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, and for fanning me too! I have fanned you back. :)
