The listing, Poppies! poppies! poppies! has ended.
Three gorgeous varieties of poppy (all are papaver somniferum) - I got more than I can plant, so I'm passing some of them on!
- Giganteum - Enormous, showy blooms over 6" across. PLants can grow to 4'. Giganteum seed heads are said to be the largest on the planet - very popular in dried flower arrangements - and they'll give you tons of seeds to put on your bagels.
- Dutch blue - These have lovely blooms in pinky-red/purple tones. They are named for their blue seeds, which are considered among the finest for baking
- Persian white - beautiful white flowers, 24-36" tall. In addition to their ornamental use, these are among the varieties grown for opium (but of course, you're not going to do that!)
Poppies attract bees, butterflies, and birds. The showy 2" - 6" blooms make them an excellent cut flower, and their unique-looking seed pods are splendid in dried arrangements or for crafts. They are known in folk medicine as a mild sedative and analgesic.
The poppy's growth cycle is about 120 days from sprouting to pods, with the bloom period lasting about 2 weeks, so gardeners sow them sequentially to get a continuous show. They re-seed themselves happily, so once you get a bed established it should come back next year.
This auction is for 1/8 tsp of each kind - the seeds are tiny, so that's actually a lot of seed. Happy bidding!
