Vintage cigarette holder....DRAGON carved ivory!!! 5" long
This is another oriental item from the grandparents estate...I know it is old and, therefore, feel confident that it is ivory. The detail in the carving is fabulous and intricate. I have taken a lot of pictures as this was/is a difficult item to photograph. one tiny "fin" is broken off under the open mouth. You can see this on the left of the second picture. It is hardly discernable and I didn't see it until closely inspected.

Please read my description. There is no way for me to know this for me for certain....but by the age (and It has been in ,my family for so many years...and I am 70) I believe it to be because of the coloring and the carving an the detail and as well as the age. I have no knowledge of how to test for ivory.

This is the response from the moderator after I contacted Listia:
Thanks for contacting Listia and bringing this to my attention. I've looked at your auction and it does not appear to be in any violation of our policies. Per our rules, Ivory is ALLOWED if it is something that has already been made into a finished product. You are welcome to keep the auction running and I will go ahead and remove your Update about taking the auction down

Why does every antique store that I go in sell ivory and they have no clue about the COA thing if these people are so sure?!?

And to those know it alls about being illegal to sell ivory or purchase it...the fact is it is not illegal at all! it is only illegal if you are a poacher! why is it ok to go to ak and buy anything made from mammoth ivory??? you both need to buy a book and read it. it is illegal to poach it and not illegal to buy a piece that was made from it. if that was the case...everyone who visits africa and buys one of the mutitude of items made from ivory and it passes thru customs legally...they do not poach for it they now only collect what they find on the ground from a deceased animal or a piece that was broken off during fighting of the animals! ok sorry for the caps but i hate know it all people who know nothing at all!!! it is beautiful and legal period!

Ive always heard that it's illegal to make any NEW products from ivory, but OLD products made from ivory, made before the year/date when the poaching of elephants for ivory became illegal, are perfectly legal to buy/sell. In my personal opinion, this item is very old & was around before it was illegal & a beautiful elephant died to make it, it would be something I'd cherish, what else should be done w/ it? Throw it in the trash? So then the elephant died for nothing?? I don't think so!
