USDA Zone: 4 - 8 (3 + 9 possible)
Native to Japan, Bleeding Hearts is an excellent hardy perennial for your Spring garden. The Bleeding Heart is fine for the border or margins of shrubbery. This cultivar tolerate full sun in colder regions, and variations up to full shade, depending on the dryness and heat climate !
Grows to an average of 2 to 3 feet long. Organic matter in the soil will supply all the protection the roots need. Foliage start to die down in mid-summer (goes dormant) and thus allow space for other plants to thrive. The flowering branch can be put in a vase for indoor enjoyment (add pinch of sugar).
Another "Clean Thumb" flowering plant I have had in gardens since a little owlet. Complete strangers have asked about its unique beauty. I currently have some under my Hydrangea tree for some spring color prior to the hydrangea blossoming. I also have another one in a corner for spring loveliness, while waiting for my potted summer vines to come into season. When the hearts goes dormant, I simply move the potted vine right over it... and come next spring, its green stalks happily come through the soil again.
