do these things run off of batteries or the car charger? I want them for when we take road trips or camping with my grand children and need to know if they work in car and out of car.

Well ya it plugs into the 12v car port charger and I don't think it plays out of the car just in it,,,,, works well I use it as well for road trips. ..keeps the kids quit lol
