Historically: Canavalia Maritima is a unique and mysterious vine with a scared ancient past among the Mazatec people of southern Mexico. Though its original purpose has long been lost, we do know it was added to burial sites which indicates its valued importance to both the living and those traveling the afterlife.

The bean on this vine is edible BUT it cannot be eaten raw and must be cooked for hours as with other hard shelled beans (i.e., navy, black-eyed etc.). Though rich in nutrients, in most cases higher than others beans, the taste is said to be somewhat bland. Claiming it wasn't 'completely inedible -' when trying the boiled bean, neither Captain Cook nor his voyaging crew, were big fan's of the taste.

In more modern times this vine can be found thriving along the sea shores of the world. Unlike most vines which cannot tolerate the sand and heat of coastal shores, this Hot Pink wonder absolutely loves it! Added to which, this fast growing vine with its strong root system serves a "GREEN" purpose by naturally assisting with beach erosion and shoring up failing sand dunes. This vine can also be trellis or fence trained.

GERMINATE: Add 40% sand to soil, moisten and drain well. Slightly nick the hard shell at the bottom tip to allow the seed to soak in water (do not pre-soak seed as it will fade or damage the written message) stick into soil with message pointing upwards. Leave the very tip of seed showing above soil. Set by bright window. Bottom water to keep moist. When seed grows and peels off its outer casing, like Magic, Your Message Will Appear!
