No stupid question!!! A fat quarter is actually a 1/4 of a yard of fabric it's just not cut the length of the fabric--it's cut 18 x 22 inches so it's a square---or a fat 1/4 of a yard. There are LOTS of patterns that use fat quarters and it's a great way to build a stash of lots of fabrics!
