Background:
Jairo Heredia grew up in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic and was signed by the Yankees as an international non-drafted free agent on 7/2/06. He was given a $285,000 bonus at 17 years of age.
Minor Leagues:
Heredia first started in the DSL league in 2006 and participated in the Dominican Instructs during the fall.
He then made his U.S. debut in the Gulf Coast League in 2007 and led the GCL staff in strikeouts. He recorded a career-high eight K’s in back-to-back starts on 7/10 and 7/18. He had shoulder soreness on August 15th so the Yankees shut him down for the rest of the year. Was rated the 15th best prospect in the GCL by Baseball America at the time.
After compiling a strong 2008 season in Low A Charleston, Heredia missed much of the ’09 campaign due to inflammation on his right shoulder but returned in time to pitch 38.1 innings and post respectable numbers. He mad ten combined starts between the Gulf Coast League Yankees, Charleston Riverdogs, and Tampa Yankees.
