I have one all you have to is have a internet service plug it in a usb port and follow the directions and if you have any problems installing it there customer service is great they will answer your questions

How exactly does this work? Do you have to have a cable subscription like dish network etc?

From what I have read on the package all you need is internet service. You might want to Google it to learn more as I really don't know much about it. Package says it comes with one full year of service with the option to add up to 5 years. Thanks for looking!

I googled it. This plugs into your computer, not your tv, and only allows access to video content that is already available for free on the internet. Would be a good tool for someone who wants to watch tv on thier computer but isnt familiar with how to search all of the different sites to find the content.
