The chains of small red squares represent regiments of Redcoats from the British armies of Burgoyne, marching from Canada, and General Howe, marching from New York.
Every step of making this quilt is provided with clear, concise instruction and/or diagram. Even a beginner can accomplish this quilt - by simply following step-by-step.

Thanks for F & W! I made this pattern for my son (he chose the pattern) and it came out great. I've attached the pix above. He's a history buff as well as a retired Marine. I could understand his choice.

Beautiful quilt! I've always wanted to make this pattern. I saw a picture of one somewhere with the white background like you made, but with red and blue to stand for the armies. I think that one had the red where Eleanor Burns has the white and blue for the "circles" of squares surrounding the red, to symbolize the Continental Army surrounding the Redcoats. That's the way I want to make it. I bid on this before I checked my rather substantial collection of QIAD books, but I finally checked last night and I don't have this one! I'll be keeping an eye on this!
