Wooden nickels were most commonly issued in the U.S. in the 1930s, after the start of the Great Depression.
It was during this decade that some banks and chambers of commerce in the United States issued wooden nickels with expiration dates to mitigate difficulties faced by merchants in making change at times of instability
In more recent times wooden nickel trading has become more popular. Individuals can have their own personalized token made and then trade with others who also have had their own made. Greatly used in advertising also.

The OLD expression, “Don’t Take Any Wooden Nickels” means Don't let anyone get over on you! Be alert and aware of shady people.

(Often said as a goodbye) Talk to you later, Don’t Take Any Wooden Nickels.
