The first time I had ever seen a square watermelon was at a Japanese restaurant. They wouldn't sell an individual slice but, only the entire watermelon. We purchased an entire watermelon for five people. It cost $90!

You can find square watermelons every now and again at the Farmer's Market in Los Angeles and they also go for about $90!

I decided to grow my own and it wasn't difficult at all. I made my first boxes out of wood but, discovered that the top of the vine needs sunlight. Then I found building plans on the internet on how to make a clear glass box out of plexy glass. That worked fine but, making the boxes were such a headache. I kept cracking the plexy glass because my drill bit wasn't as sharp as it should have been.

Then... I figured it out that you can just take clear square RubberMaid boxes (I found at both Target and Walmart) and do the same. I just boar a hole into the lid. I've grown them just fine. Just be sure to allow the stem to get plenty of sunlight even if you use a container that's not so clear. Don't move the watermelon around either. You're going to get the itch to want to either show it off, pick it up to get a good look at it or feel that the stem should be pushed in further. Just let it go and the watermelon plant will do it's thing.

It's easy to remove the watermelon from a hinged box. When removing from a plastic square container, you'll have to really give it a heeve hoe. I've had to carefully cut the plastic container away but, they didn't cost much anyway. Give growing square watermelon a try at least once. It's really a fun thing to do.

~Pretty much any sort of melon can be grown in a square shape. Now the newest thing is to grow them in heart shape or pyramid shapes. Too cool, aye?
