Do these books give ideas for colors to use? I have never used a book for patterns so this would be new to me. I have only used the kits up until now and am looking to expand my experience

Yes They have symbols which is on a color chart. Very easy to read. I started doing x stitch with little Christmas ornaments. Good luck I'm sure you will do great!
