The listing, RARE ~ Morelle de Balbis, The Litchi Tomato ~ Solanum sisymbriifolium has ended.
Litchi Tomato is a fairly rare Solanum producing lovely white flowers followed by red fruits enclosed in a prickly husk. The husk splits open when the fruit is ripe.
Its cherry size berries & distinctive flavor make it fine for use in a wide variety of culinary applications — fruit tarts, preserves, jams & sauces, to sorbets & wine. Easy to grow & frost resistant.
From S. America, where it has been an important part of indigenous cookery for 100s of yrs. It has fascinated gardeners all over the world for its ornamental & culinary uses.
The plant itself is covered w/ thorns. It is sometimes used as a hedge plant to discourage animals from wandering into vegetable gardens.
Fruits ripen red & are round tapering to a blunt point. Flesh is yellow & contains tiny flat seeds arranged much the same way as seeds in a cherry tomato. When eaten out of hand, the raw fruit has a mouth feeling of raspberries. Flavor is tart & refreshing. Can be used as a relatively good substitute in cherry pies.
Plants have little cold tolerance. Thrive in hot, sunny locations.
IMPORTANT! Plant at least 2 for best pollination!
